speech

  1. it was the perfect job. i had the skils, i had the experience and i knew i could get it.
  2. “today will be a strengths based interview christopher”
  3. ok that doesnt sound too bad.
  4. “Please tell us, do you like working in a team”
  5. ” oh yeah absolutely. i love working in a team. im a real people person. always have been. love people. great with people”
  6. “do you thrive when challenged”
  7. “thrive. oh yeah. i love a challenge. im very resilient. determined. always pushing through. the pressure brings out the best in me”
  8. and on it went. i didnt get the job and at the end of the interview i felt like a total fool.
  9. i hadnt shown any of my skills, i hadnt shown any of my experience, i hadnt shown my character.
  10. and not because i wasnt good enough. but because i didnt know how to tell my story.
  11. what i needed … was a framework. PAUSE
  12. A framework is a mental template
  13. it is a simple structure that you can slot your thoughts into on the spot
  14. you can think of it like a sat nav for your answers
  15. you might not know in advance all the details of where you will go
  16. but if you follow it you will always reach your destination PAUSE
  17. 6 weeks ago i walked into a debating society for the first time
  18. first timer. didnt know anyone. but volunteerd for some impromptu debating anyway
  19. I asked someone there for some advice on how to debate … and they gave me 3 words
  20. POINT REASON EXAMPLE a framework POINT REASON EXAMPLE
  21. the topic i got to debate was was very trivial, arbitrary “do clothes matter in a relationship”
  22. i could a immediately blurted out yes or no and then fumbled around trying to justify it
  23. but instead i had a structure. a framework.
  24. POINT: yes clothes matter
  25. REASON: first impressions count
  26. EXAMPLE: imagine being on a first date and the person turns up looking like they have made no effort
  27. POINT: but also no, clothes dont matter
  28. REASON: character is everything, clothes are just appearance
  29. EXAMPLE: behind those scruffy overalls they are wearing.. could be your soulmate
  30. Suddently, i wasnt fumbling anymore. i was debating
  31. and it is not just debating or interviews where frameworks are useful
  32. right here every couple of weeks each of us faces the same challenge… table topics
  33. I believe that about 95% of table topics can fit into at least 1 of 5 categories
  34. a personal story, an opinion, giving advise, producing a comparison, or a hypothetical
  35. you dont believe me.. give me a table topic 36.
  36. id love to see frameworks become a part of how we talk at this club
  37. next time you nail a table topic, share with people which framework you used
  38. share what works for you, refine it, and make it your own
  39. because here is what i know
  40. back in that interview room i was lost for words
  41. i had the skills
  42. i had the experience
  43. i just didnt have the structure
  44. but now i do
  45. and im never going to get caught off guard again. 47. 48. 49. 50.
